2009 Highlights
COMMITTEES FOCUS ON CORE ISSUES
  • Energy:Supported Renewable Energy Incentive Districts (H.B. 2336) enabling Arizona counties to designate and create Renewable Energy Districts, advancing clean, alternative energy; featured presentations on the federal economic stimulus by Jim Apperson, Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Recovery and Knox Kimberly, of Triadvocates; toured the APS Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and hosted Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes for a discussion on Arizona's Energy policies.
  • Land Use/Open Space: Created a Project Task Force to undertake phase three of the “The Valley’s Pedestrian Freeway – A Priceless Necklace of Trails and Gems,” promoting Valley Forward’s vision for a regional trails system in the Valley; exhibited and distributed our trails Passport at National Public Lands Day at South Mountain Park; toured the Scottsdale Waterfront, as well as Transit Oriented Design projects along the Light Rail and solar installations at a Habitat for Humanity community in Apache Junction.

  • Transportation/Air:Hosted a roundtable discussion on greenhouse gas developments and climate change legislation; featured Ben Grumbles, newly appointed director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for a briefing on the statewide environmental plan; hosted from Lawrence Odle, director of the Maricopa County Air Quality Department and co-sponsored the county’s first Annual Air Quality Conference.

  • Water: Developed a Water Efficiency Leaders program including a submittal form and judging criteria and announced Holsum Bakery as the inaugural recipient along with two merit winners; toured the bakery to preview sustainability practices.
  •  

     

COLLABORATING ON SUSTAINBILITY INITIATIVES
  • Participated on an Advisory Committee for the publication City by Design, which features a chapter on sustainable development with an introduction by Valley Forward Association.

  • Served on the Parks/Land Preservation subcommittee for the City of Phoenix’s successful application for a 2009 All-America City Award.

  • Participated as a jurist in the Regional Wal-Mart Better Living Business Plan Competition.

  • Served on the Maricopa County Air Quality Department’s Advisory Board.

  • Served as a bio-regional partner and exhibitor at an international expo presented by the U.S. Green Building Council, which drew more than 25,000 attendees.

 

 

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Established the Valley Forward Fund for a Sustainable Future endowment with the  Arizona Community Foundation, developed a Gift Acceptance Policy to facilitate a funding campaign and achieved 100 percent Board participation in the rollout.

  • Launched Phase I and II of VFA's new interactive website, including an online E-Update newsletter, membership directory, blog, photo gallery and web based calendar.

  • Unveiled VFA's Branding and Identity Guide to Board of Directors and members at large.

  • Hosted three Chairman’s luncheons for new members to network and become engaged in the organization.

  • The Business Journal named Valley Forward President Diane Brossart a Green Pioneer, recognizing her and the organization as champions of sustainability.

  • The Phoenix Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America presented Diane Brossart with the 2009 Phoenix Award for outstanding support of PR to benefit the community.

  •  

    ADVOCATING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

    • Presented VFA’s Livable Communities Award to 7th grade students in conjunction with the Future City Competition.

    • Featured Environmental Excellence Award winners in the Arizona Institute of Architect’s Eco-month 2009 Project Guide.

    • Supported the City of Peoria's application for a Transportation Enhancement Grant.

    • Supported the City of Tempe’s application for a Showcase Community Climate and Energy Grant application.

    • Adopted the METRO light rail station located at Central and Camelback and hosted our first rail ride tour to commemorate the effort.

     

     

    SPECIAL EVENTS PROMOTE HEALTHY LIVING IN THE DESERT

    • Partnered with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, SRP and Enterprise Rent-A-Car to plant 40 trees for 40 years downtown.

    • Partnered with Westcor and Hoskin Ryan to present two Valley Forward "Just for the Fun of it Mixers” in celebration of our 40th year anniversary.

    • Presented Aligned with Arizona Office Technologies at Arizona’s Sustainability Summit 2009 and was included in the pre-game show and on the JumboTron at the Arizona Diamondbacks game.

    • Hosted Valley Forward’s sixth annual Livability Summit, featuring Ralph Nader and Ed Begley Jr., followed by panel discussions on solar energy and sustainable capitalism and over 50 exhibits.

    • Presented Going Green and Profiting at the Enterprise Network Breakfast.

    • Expanded the reach of Valley Forward’s 29th annual Environmental Excellence Awards gala held in partnership with SRP by generating a record number of entries and drawing 600+ business and civic leaders to the event.

    • Partnered with the Arizona Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to host a luncheon featuring Richard Fedrizzi, Chairman and CEO of the national USGBC.

    • Hosted with several corporate partners Verde in the Desert, a VIP luncheon in conjunction with the international Greenbuild ’09 conference.

    • Hosted 150 children at a special address by Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Wood and advocate for children in nature, who also headlined at our 40th Annual Luncheon.

    41 YEARS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

    Valley Forward was founded in 1969, one year before the first Earth Day.

    Members of Valley Forward represent large corporations and small businesses, municipalities and government agencies, educators, non-profits and concerned individuals working together on environmental initiatives.

    Throughout its history, Valley Forward has advocated for regional cooperation and connectivity.

    Experts are declaring that the time for sustainability is now and more than ever before a driving opportunity for our financial solvency.  Valley Forward’s 2009 theme is Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy.
