Valley Forward Water Survey of Valley Residents

(March 2006) The majority of Valley residents believe that there is water crisis in Arizona (63%) and a similar percentage of residents do NOT feel the state and local governments are doing enough to address water conservation (58%). Residents who are age 30 and older are more likely than those under the age of 30 to think there is a water crisis in Arizona (64% of those ages 30 to 49; 66% of those ages 50+ vs. 44% of those under the age of 30). Residents who are age 50 and older also are most likely to feel the state and local governments are not doing enough for water conservation (61% “no” vs. 48% of those under age 30).

In general, Valley residents do not believe that there is enough water to sustain the current growth and development within the state (49% “no”), and particularly not the growth and development within Maricopa County (60% “no”).

Approximately half of Valley residents feel they are at least “somewhat familiar” with the Colorado River water rights issues and the impact they have on the State of Arizona (46%). Older residents and those with household incomes of at least $75,000 are most likely to be familiar with the Colorado River rights issues (53% and 54%, respectively).

The vast majority of Valley residents indicated they would be willing to begin following water conservation procedures if the drought in Arizona continues (89%).
