| VFA UNVEILS NEW WEB SITE, E-UPDATE |
People are getting news and information differently today than ever before with the internet driving our quest for answers in just about every subject matter imaginable.
In an effort to enhance our communications with members, prospects and the general public, Valley Forward is revamping its web site and quarterly e-newsletter, Update. This issue is the first to reflect our new format and by following the links, will take you to our re-designed web site and online membership directory.
These projects are a work in progress and we welcome your input along the way. As we unveil our new fully automated web site, we encourage you to explore the pages and help with the next phase of development – adding links and expanding resources towards our goal of becoming a source for all things green. The next phase of development will include a monthly calendar of events and committee meetings, a photo gallery and a blog.
We are seeking sponsors for future issues of the Update e-newsletter, which is distributed to more than 1,000 business and civic leaders throughout the Valley and State. For a minimal cost of $250, you’ll receive a short story (75 words) about your organization, inclusive of a photo, logo identification and live link to your own web site. Click here to reserve your space for the Mar/April, Sept/Oct and/or Nov/Dec issues. |
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Diane Brossart |
| GOING GREEN BENEFITS
ENVIRONMENT AND ECONOMY
With a challenging but exciting New Year upon us, it seems a good time to reflect on our past and project hope for the future. Our 2009 theme – Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy – is especially appropriate in this, Valley Forward’s milestone 40th anniversary.
Environmental sustainability is not just a buzzword today, but has become a defining adjective for our generation.
Experts are declaring that the time for sustainability is now, and more than ever before, a driving opportunity for our financial solvency. With gas dollars hitting record highs last year, congress is dually fighting for more fuel-efficient vehicles. And in an economic time where our daily consumption of oil, efficient use of utilities and weaning of added luxuries are constantly in check, we’re already taking steps in the right environmental direction by implementing these few things.
The economy is forcing less wasteful, greener consumption from all ends of the spectrum in our society – bringing to life what will imminently dictate our delicately balanced future.
This year, Anaheim University calculated that green business and education equates to 265 billion dollars, reaches 1.6 million people with a five percent growth per annum – a sector that was closer to zero just 10 years ago.
In a similar study, Oxford University climate policy expert Cameron Hepburn suggests global commerce could receive a one-trillion-dollar boost. Green business practice is here to stay and will continue to grow in importance as we move toward a sustainable future.
While sustainability reaches a global audience, it also directly influences our community. Local leaders are helping lead the way to a more sustainable Valley. But the greatest strides occur through collaborative partnerships of the public and private sectors. Working together, we can ensure the livability and sustainability of our unique desert environment.
And similarly, our new president will not only be judged for his economic makeover, but also the level of attention he pays toward the overall sustainability of our nation.
The job is too large for just one, but also too beneficial, with its infinite opportunity, to pass by. Our collective outcome will mark the balance we strive to create between earth and economy.

| A MILESTONE CELEBRATION - 40 YEARS! |
| A group of visionaries came together in 1969 – one year before the nation’s first Earth Day – to form Valley Forward Association. From that day forward, this unique public interest group has advocated for environmental and quality of life issues in the region spanning 40 years and beyond.
Panelists at VFA's January Board of Directors/Membership luncheon reflected on the past and a glimpse ahead.
(L-R) Larry Lazarus, Valley Forward Chairman, 1990-91; Lattie F. Coor of the Center for the Future of Arizona; program moderator, Kathleen Ingley, of The Arizona republic; Steve Nielsen, of Arizona State University and Valley Forward Chairman Christopher Schmaltz, of Gust Rosenfeld, P.L.C.
Attendees enjoyed the ambiance of Memorial Hall at Steele Indian School Park, a VFA Environmental Excellence award winner listed in the National Register of Historic places.

LIVABILITY SUMMIT DRAWS GREEN PIONEERS |
Valley Forward’s Livability Summit will celebrate the organization’s 40th anniversary year with pioneers of the sustainability movement – Ralph Nader (L) and Ed Begley Jr. (R). Like our Association, they embraced environmental stewardship long before it went mainstream.
The sixth annual summit on April 16, 2009 will be held as a half-day conference focusing on the theme Healthy Environment - Healthy Economy. Hundreds of business and civic leaders will attend the summit, which this year advocates for sustainable capitalism, focusing on energy, new technologies, transportation, green building, financial incentives and more. read more
